A Human-Centred Approach

I was recently reading an article from Seth Godin about how the pandemic highlighted the universal yet varied human responses to crisis, emphasizing the need for individual initiative and collective action in facing existential threats like climate change.

As I was reading, I felt compelled to email Seth with some of my own thoughts on climate change, leadership and forward-thinking responses to change.

I was going to rewrite this into its own article, but I wanted you to see it first-hand…

“Climate change is a weird thing. Its impacts are unevenly distributed, what's in the news-cycle one day disappears the next.

It might seem counter intuitive, but I believe the way to have an impact on climate change is to actually turn around the conversation from "help them", to, "help yourself". Similar to the, put you oxygen mask on first before others on the plane…

I have recently started a residential energy efficiency consultancy called ARKATA. We help design professionals and homeowners make homes more energy efficient BY PUTTING THE HUMAN FIRST.

Everything we do is human-centred, when we specify an enhancement, what are the human outcomes of doing so?

We all get that going more energy efficient is sustainable and can reduce running costs but there is not enough discussion around what the human actually gets out of it beyond these surface level items.

Double or triple glazing = more consistent internal temperatures which = more healthy living environment

Higher insulation = less noise pollution = more healthy and comfortable living environment

Identified and recommended ventilation paths = natural cooling of the home = less energy used = more peace of mind

Change from gas to electric = less energy used = healthier air quality

How easy is it to go more energy efficient when the hidden benefits are so clearly identified?!”

At ARKATA, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional outcomes to our clients and their clients and helping to build resilient, future-proofed and adaptable homes.

I didn't expect a reply, but Seth's reply was simple yet motivating…

“really well said, Ben

keep leading, we need it”
