The Future of Construction
We live in a fast-paced and interconnected world where the need for collaboration has never been more crucial. Businesses and industries are realising that the traditional linear processes are often inefficient and lack transparency.
To create a better future, we are witnessing a shift towards a multitude of parallel processes, where early engagement, collaboration and consideration are powered by technology, resulting in better projects, better bottom-lines and a better impact on society.
I wanted to take the time to explore some possible future-influencing technologies that I am passionate about; blockchains, AI, and the democratisation of previous areas inaccessible by the majority.
These transformations are not only reshaping the way we work, but also opening up new possibilities.
The Limitations of a Linear Process
Industries like construction follow linear processes, where each phase of a project occur sequentially. While this approach has been the norm, it comes with inherent limitations where linear processes often lead to delays, cost overruns, and a lack of flexibility.
Embracing Process Innovation
The future of open collaboration will be necessary to combat increasing building code compliance, a rising awareness of climate change and its impact, as well as the financial cost of business as usual.
Parallel processes will bring together all relevant parties together from the outset of a project. Architects, builders, developers, consultants, and community members can engage in a collaborative effort to ensure that every aspect of a project is considered holistically.
Early engagement like this allows for real-time adjustments and optimisations before impactful decisions are made, resulting in more efficient and successful projects.
The Role of Technology
Technology plays a pivotal role in enabling this shift towards open collaboration.
Blockchains & Transparency
Blockchain technology is revolutionising transparency in various industries, including construction and consultancy. Its decentralised and tamper-proof ledger ensures that every transaction and decision is recorded and cannot be altered retroactively. This transparency builds trust among stakeholders and provides an immutable record of project history, from design decisions to budget allocations.
AI & Decision Support
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is enhancing collaboration by providing data-driven insights and decision support. AI algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data to identify potential risks, optimise resource allocation, and predict project outcomes. This empowers stakeholders to make informed decisions, reducing errors and enhancing project efficiency.
Democratisation & Access to Information
The democratisation of information is breaking down walls that once separated different stakeholders. Thanks to digital platforms and open-access tools, architects, builders, developers, consultants and community members can access project information and updates in real-time. This transparency fosters a sense of ownership and collaboration among all parties involved.
Embracing an Uncertain Future
An uncertain future demands innovative thinking and a willingness to explore unconventional solutions. Open collaboration can lead to breakthroughs and disrupt the construction industry, propelling us forward towards a better future.
A future of increased open collaboration, powered by technology, driven by transparency and characterised by holistic outcomes is a future that can cope with uncertainty.
With linear processes giving way to parallel and collaborative efforts, projects will deliver better outcomes for their community and investors.
